Just a quick blog following up with the daily activities. First, I must say registration went rather smooth considering the amount of kids who are participating. Second, the staff which is divided up among the kids were beyond great.
I realize it was the first day of camp but I have never seen such a better group of campers. I received zero complaints during the entire day. I broke the kids up into 2 groups by age/grade. The two separated groups are each coached by 2 coaches. Both gyms were practicing the same fundamentals, skills and played the same style of games 3 on 3. The older group was able to begin there championship week with 5 on 5 games, due to the speed of play. The younger group was demonstrated how to play 3 on 3. Afterwards they played 3 on 3 games for a good 30 minutes.
I separated the two groups into their own 30 minute lunches. The word was the older group had a difficult time picking up for themselves and the younger group had no issues finding the trash bins.
Every child was able the use of their own leather basketball. Which came in awfully handy when we covered our ball handling skills in the morning for 30 minutes.Before the guest speaker arrived, all campers were involved with using the 'speed and agility ladder'. These ladders are like a real ladder but it spreads out on the court. The kids had a lot of fun with the challenge of improving their foot speed and strength as well as their coordination.
The day concluded with a guest speaker, Emmanuel Negedu. Emmanuel is 23 years of age, graduated from Brewster Academy and attended The University of Tennessee on a full basketball scholarship. In Emmanuel's 2nd year at Tennessee he suffered heart failure during practice. Was pronounced dead for a few minutes and was revived. To this day he is unable to play the sport which he loved so much. His story is remarkable. I am glad the kids were able to listen to him speak about 'opportunity and appreciatioin'. Emmanuel's other greatest message was about the importance of school and how you must focus on education, family then sports. He did a wonderful job talking and demonstrating a few moves around the rim. A few demonstrating and speaking the kids were separated among the hoops and had a chance to work on the 'lecture of how to post up'. The kids were super attentive and showed much respect to Emmanuel for taking time out of his busy day to stop by and visit. Check out some of Emmanuel's highlights while at Brewster.
There were award winners from playing a shooting competition during the morning. I hope it is OK but I used donated gift cards from Bailey's Bubble (ice cream) in downtown Wolfeboro. Tomorrow's guest will be speaking about education, character and will be demonstrating 'the triple threat'. He has coached for 19 years at the Division 2 level. He is still among the highest scoring leaders of Division 2 history, Jeff Gore.
I am already looking forward to tomorrow as the agenda will be a little different yet more challenging.
